Canadian TV published a brief post under the headline “Ontario to expand autism therapists training” indicating that the Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS) will fund training at several locations in Ontario (CA).
A college certificate program in Ontario is being expanded to train more therapists to treat children with autism spectrum disorder.
The expansion of the program to three more colleges brings the total number of participating colleges to 12 across Ontario.
I see that Fanshawe College, for example, offers a program in human and community services that includes a foci on careers (e.g., “developmental services worker”) that would include work with individuals with Autism, but nothing particularly specific about nature of the training.
Are these programs for paraprofessionals? On what do they focus? Do these programs provide training in evidence-based practices?
Perhaps someone who knows about these programs could enlighten me.

Well lets hope that someones done their homework on this one!

You’re right on the $$ there, mcewen. Sadly, some of the worst cases of dyspedagogia can be found in teacher education institutions. Some professors are more wedded to consistency with a philosophical stance than with preparing teachers to use practices that promote better outcomes for children. Well, I suppose a better way to say that would be that they are more wedded to consistency with a philosophical stance that doesn’t put children’s outcomes at the top of the priority list, or one that contends that we can’t really measure children’s outcomes, or something….arrrgh.
Thanks for writing.
Hello !
I am enjoying reading the comments posted by peers. Having varying experiences with young people associated with emotional and behavioral disorders, I have found the phenomena of spiritual intervention to be transformational in the positive development and beneficial change for those disturbed. Having a spiritual relationship with the LORD through Yeshua (Jesus Christ) the Messiah has allowed me to access the undivided attention of many disturbed people, including those gribbed with autism (i.e. regular eye contact and communicative response). I continue to pray and faithfully ask the LORD to intercede and minister spiritually and have found His peace will often reside in an environment and upon the countenance of the person with a disorder, restoring them to a place of functionality.
Thank you for reading this. Your comments are welcome.
Sincerely, Mrs. Diane McDonald
